On this date in 1796, a French republican army under General Lazare Hoche left the port of Brest bound for Ireland. There were many exiled Irish revolutionaries in its ranks, including the famous Theobald Wolfe Tone. It would be foiled by bad weather and the Royal Navy.

Today in 1805: a British fleet under Lord Horatio Nelson decisively defeated a combined Franco-Spanish fleet off Cape Trafalgar near Cádiz, Spain. Nearly 5,000 men lost their lives, including Nelson. British control of the seas was secured for the rest of the Napoleonic Wars.

On this day in 1799, André Masséna won one of his greatest victories at the Second Battle of Zürich, defeating a combined Austro-Russian army and shattering the Coalition offensive into Switzerland.
