THE BLACK CAT (1981).

There have been many diverse film adaptations of the famed Edgar Allan Poe story. I like to think the author would have enjoyed Lucio Fulci's grisly and fantastical interpretation the best.

BURIAL GROUND (1981)

Sure, it's dumb and trashy. But director Andrea Bianchi exploits the shooting location's architectural beauty to the max and throws a non-stop barrage of mayhem at the audience from the 14-minute mark to the last frame.

MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (1932).

A pre-code that eludes me no more! It's not on the level of the major 1930s classics, but the film is well paced and more explicit than I expected. I should know by now with pre-code films.

Starring Bela Lugosi.

Appreciation tweet for TIFFANY BOLLING (b. 1947).

The beautiful, edgy, quirky star of & drive-in favs such as BONNIE'S KIDS, WICKED WICKED, THE CANDY SNATCHERS, THE CENTERFOLD GIRLS, and KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS.

DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING (1972).

Lucio Fulci's dim view of humanity gets a cathartic outlet in his later films (zombies come along to wipe us out). DUCKLING offers no such nihilistic satisfaction.

Not the goriest but perhaps the bleakest.

Godzilla turned 65 yesterday, but you know who else started collecting social security earlier this year?

1954 was a good year for iconic monsters.

I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978).

Not the first r/r film, but surely the most controversial. The disparate reactions are sociologically intriguing: To some it's traumatizing, to others cathartic. To some it's misogynist exploitation, to others a feminist statement.

PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES (1965).

Mario Bava's micro-budgeted movie probably cost $50 to make, but it was money well spent. Not only is the film creepy as hell, it clearly inspired many later, bigger films (despite the denials of their respective creators).
