Shirley’s work always to me seems to hum with warmth and kindness. Her characterisation was flawless, her detail incredible and her skill at creating drama and magic (often from the everyday) was just excellent. Masterful. 3/4

She captured so well real life. #cant you just feel the wind whipping around you in this first picture&the giddy feeling it gave you?
And there is something so special about the second picture. That realisation that grown ups had a magical unknown life beyond your front door

So very sad to hear that #ShirleyHughes has died. Her work has been apart of my life for as long as I can remember.

As a child of the 80s I think I responded to the fact that in her work I saw me and the world around me. The clothes, the well loved toys, the lived in houses

I hope anyone reading either How Winston Came Home For Christmas or How Winston Delivered Christmas enjoys the last two chapters.

I also draw inspiration from people on tv. The idea for this woman came from this character in Bright Young Things.

Also colour is important. Everyone here is dressed in Christmassy red and green. Nice challenge to use a limited pallette. ⬇️

I put all that together and get drawing. In this crowd scene I drew inspiration from other places. This couple of gents are based on a couple I saw in Galleries Lafayette on Christmas wandering around with their pet rabbit in a shawl. I KNEW they would be useful one day… ⬇️

I have started to dress the front of my house for Halloween…

(And by that I mean I spent much of the afternoon mummified in faux ivy)
