Walter Crane's Painting Book, 1889
After disappointments in his artistic career Walter Crane designed popular books introducing to children.
Here he gave a coloured plate of a fairy for children to paint.

Perseus carefully shows Andromeda the Medusa's head reflected in water - to keep her safe from its petrifying power.
Later he will use his trusty Gorgon's head to turn his enemy to stone.

Hylas & the Nymphs - Waterhouse
The painting's hypnotic power in part comes from the uncanny similarity of the 7 nymphs - Waterhouse is thought to have used no more than two models.

Illustrator Cicely Mary Barker was largely self-taught due to ill health.
Her Flower Fairies combined botanical sketches with characterful life drawings of local children.
Here her portrait of ‘The Garden Boy’ becomes the watchful Elm
