24th Window. Christmas Eve. Look! Old Fox is bringing in the plum pudding, aflame with brandy! Around the long oak table in the Morning Room, so many beloved faces bright with merriment. And there are jugs of thick Dorset cream & a silver thrupenny bit hiding in Grandcub's bowl!

9th Window. Hare's father had saved up his small pension for a month to buy his son a grand present for Christmas. Walking carefully through the snow with his stick, he made his way to Brights, where he bought their finest Ulster, to keep Hare warm as toast in the winter cold.

9th Window. Well-wrapped up & beaming with excitement, Bear's Sisters & a slightly shaky Mouse had caught the early train to Bournemouth. They were going Christmas Shopping at the department stores of Plummer Roddis & Brights, which held a mythical enchantment in the hamlet.

7th Window. Late at night or when her kits were at school, the Squirrel turned her attention to her sewing & her lace making, her only source of income. Her bobbin lace was particularly beautiful, as fine as any in Flanders, each piece as delicate as gossamer, as white as snow.

Sunday night and the Little Girl was so excited she could barely get to sleep. Old Fox had dropped off an invitation to an All Hallows Eve party at the cottage. It was a lovely invitation, illustrated with friendly-looking witches & sleek black cats & glittering silver cobwebs.

Dusk. Old Fox had gone to the village churchyard to leave flowers on the graves of those long forgotten. Michaelmas daisies & the last white roses. And the wraiths came to see him, in their silks & their worsted, & they talked & laughed for a long, long while in the fading light.

Wearing her best woollen cloak & bright red mittens, the Little Girl had been for another walk, all the way to Thunders Knoll. Her Aunt was in the hall when she came back & was moved to tears by her pink cheeks & the wonderful cold earthy scent of outside which swept around her.
