A blustery day by the soft coal fire in the Parlour. Sea Otter had lit his pipe & given in to Wolf's request for stories. There in that safe warm, he conjured the dark swell of the North Atlantic, the bitter cold of Middle Watch, sea stars wheeling in their stern beauty above.

The full moon cast a strange pewter light over the village & on the green, the Newcomer was beguiling his audience. He stood on the steps of his wagon & through the hot red sparks of his fire, wove a tale of a prince lost in the Far North, a tale of magic & thievery & murder.

Wolf & Pine Marten had gone to see the newcomer on the village green. He tells stories & your fortune too, said Wolf, he drops candle wax in river water. Sees your future in the shapings. Pine Marten was terrified & excited in equal measure. He'd never met a real magician before.

Old Fox was sitting contentedly in the sunlit dining room, doors open to the garden. That morning, he'd received the annual letter from one of his oldest friends, a Weasel from an old Californian mining family. They'd met in Sacramento many years ago at an engineering conference.
