This one from a private collection is my favourite William Prinsep painting. A brilliant, uber-realistic depiction of a powerful Norwester or Kalboishakhi on the #Hooghly in #Calcutta. The painting is from 1819-21.

I got 7 vials of blood drawn today, and I can totally feel how a round of "bloodletting" would've made you feel in the 17th-18th century! To think that in #Calcutta many people were bled several times a day for "treating" diseases like cholera- it must've been horrible!
Chelsea and I wish a very Happy #Thanksgiving to our friends and family in the United States!
Enjoy the #turkey!

If you walk around #Bishnupur, you’ll find the outer walls of some of its government buildings are decorated with exquisite murals. These are painted by local painters in local style depicting local stories from Bishnupur’s culture. What a fantastic way to showcase the “local”!
So @Windycom is predicting #CycloneYaas will hit coastal #Bengal and #Odisha late on 25th May. It also predicts that the mangrove forests in #Sunderbans will deflect the cyclone towards #Midnapore & #Balasore. This is scary. Stay safe everyone.
I love reading about #Colonial projects of cataloguing natural world of 'The Orient'. One of my favourites is a mid-17thC #botanical text 'Hortus Malabaricus' compiled by van Rheede- a detailed study of plants in #Dutch Malabar incl. these fascinating sketches!
