Good thing you mentioned the Boeotian since I've never really encountered a reconstruction of it as a hat and only a helmet even though most Greek helmets like it along with the Phrygian and Pilos started as hats.

The leather strap theory is sort of my counter thesis on the concensus that the Macedonian pelte used the same Argive Porpax grip to the Aspis which I disagree.
I believe that the Macedonian shields likely used leather straps to fasten the entire left arm to the shield.
