Don't think of color sketches as just sliding the hue around. Consider drastically changing the lighting, climate, weather, etc. How do those things affect your story and mood?

Master studies are the sort of exercise that it's really hard to outgrow.

You can do them as a beginner and learn a lot. Then you can keep doing them in 10 years and still learn a lot.

Spring is coming—get outside and paint!

Plein air is where I learned most of what I know about color, light, and landscapes. You don't need fancy tools or a nice set up (I think I sat on the ground for all of these). Just get out there and make images.

Draw/paint your friends (and strangers)!

It's a great exercise, you learn to draw effectively/stealthily, and it's a fun challenge.

Artists do not learn to make their own work without extensive imitation.

Let's ditch the stupid notions and obsession with "originality."

Over the years, I have done countless master studies of all sorts of subjects in all sorts of media. And they've never stopped teaching me.

Master studies are like a complete education in one exercise. They can cover so many fundamentals and are an enlightening, encouraging practice.

Plein air painting is one of my favorite ways for learning color and light.

Nature is a challenging but will teach you so, so much if you carefully observe it.

Get out there and throw some paint around! It doesn't have to be perfect--just capture the beauty of light. ♥
