October 23, 1885: Canadian painter Lawren Harris is born.

Harris was a member of the famous Group of Seven. He was also the founding member and first president of the Canadian Group of Painters.

In 2016, "Mountain Forms" (1926) sold at auction for a record $11.21 million. 🎨

West turned down an offer of knighthood by his patron, King George III. But in 1792, was elected the second President of the Royal Academy in London.

Joachim Patinir's "Temptations of St. Anthony the Abbot" (1520-24) is his only definite collaboration example. He painted the exquisite landscape, and fellow Flemish artist Quentin Massys painted the figures. 🎨

October 5, 1524: Flemish painter Joachim Patinir dies.

An interesting #ArtFact about Patinir: He is considered the first Western artist to have specialized in landscape painting. His friend Albrecht Dürer called him "a good landscape painter".

Salzburg's Makart Square (also called Makartplatz) in Austria was named after the painter.

October 1, 1532: Netherlandish painter Jan Gossaert dies in Belgium.

Gossaert was one of the first artists to introduce the Italian Renaissance style to the "Low Countries": Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

Caravaggio's life was certainly a dramatic one. But in my opinion, he was one of the greatest artists who ever lived.

September 19, 1867: English book illustrator Arthur Rackham is born.

In his lifetime, Rackham illustrated more than 60 books, ranging from Grimm's Fairy Tales to Shakespeare, Dickens, Milton, and Edgar Allan Poe.
