The impact of these developments were not limited to the adult PC scene, of course. Many adult titles would also release censored counterparts on home consoles. Non-adult, original home console titles would take a stab at emotional, character-driven stories, too.

The adult game scene (generally) shifted focus from "erotic" to "romantic". "Crying games" (titles designed to evoke emotion & make you cry) began to release at a rapid pace. Notable companies like Leaf & Key downplayed sexual content to pump up character & tear-jerking plot.

As such, Dōkyūsei created quite the splash, selling more than 100,000 copies! This was not only unusual for a PC game, but for an adult game, as well. Other companies took notice and began to pursue more drama, characterization, and deeper romance, too.

Dōkyūsei was innovative for its blend between ADV & simulation parts. This novel tie between character interaction & open-ended setting made it realistic. The player was free to discover events on their own. Some weren't grounded to a specific place, making its cast feel human.

The concept is an evolution of Elf's 1989 PC title "Pinky Ponky", a more novel-type ADV where the player is tasked with "picking up girls". Dōkyūsei's exploration is also reminiscent of Disk System title "Kieta Princess".

Dōkyūsei was first released by Elf Corporation in 1992 for JP PCs. It's a "romance adventure game" where you have 21 days to bond with 14 heroines before confessing to 1 at the end. You can freely explore a town, which passes time. Sometimes, you'll come across ADV-style events.

King of Fighters 97's "Shermie" is said to have been inspired by Lupin the Third's "Fujiko Mine", however, I've seen a few mentions on JP sites that she may have also been inspired by YU-NO's "Eriko Takeda".

YU-NO released in 1996, and KOF '97 in 1997. I wonder...
