The Vikings thought that the Northern Lights were the souls of fallen warriors on their way to Valhalla.
Contrary to popular belief the Vikings did not come to the British Isles to rape and pillage. They were incredibly good-looking and so well-groomed that the Anglo-Saxon women willingly threw themselves at the blond invaders.

The story inspired this painting I've done during lockdown.

LINDISFARNE CASTLE. First executed 2000 and re-worked today. Lying off the Northumberland coast Holy Island was the first place in Europe to experience the Vikings when they sacked the monastery in 796 AD. The Castle was built in Tudor times to deter incursions by the Scots.
