I enjoy breaking a lot of compositional rules. My favourite is to place elements facing out of the frame. I like to suggest there is a world beyond the drawing. I can use it to imply freedom—or to express loss like these two disappearing doves.

I think this finished battle scene got lost in the shuffle so here it is again.

The figures are drawn in.
There are a lot of action sequences in film or illustration where we can tell what is going on. The camera might even follow an arrow or a bullet, while the action unfolds in a narrative way.
I wanted to make the battle look confusing and terrifying.
