I mean it varies. Reach is a fairly somber, Band of Brother's style military story about the destruction of a world. but that works because its set in one of the darkest hours.
Meanwhile in ODST, the troopers happily wisecrack in the middle of a shootout. It's pretty light 5/7

Halo's lore is pretty dark. It's got black operations, tyranny, weapons of mass destruction and death squads all round.
And that's just from the good guys. We're not even talking about the glassing and galactic mass destruction here. 2/7
