Remaining mostly in the Cavalry, Merritt served on the Plains and then as Superintendent of West Point. During the Spanish-American War, he commanded the 8th Corps in the Philippines and captured Manila, after which he was named the first military governor of the Philippines.
With the U.S. position on Cemetery Ridge in danger of being breached, General Winfield Hancock saw a confederate brigade advancing toward a gap in his lines. He turned to Colvill, commanding the only infantry in the area, and ordered "Advance, Colonel, and take those colors!"
After Pickens served as Minister to Russia, the family settled at Pickens’ forced labor farm, Edgewood, where they enslaved 276 Black people and were vocal supporters of both slavery and secession. He was made Governor three days before South Carolina seceded.
Butler’s men withdrew after several failed attacks, having suffered about 75 casualties, including the death of Lt. John Greble, the first West Point graduate and regular @USArmy officer killed during the war. Magruder’s casualties were 1 dead and 8 wounded.
As the U.S. troops appeared to be flanked, reinforcements arrived in the form of the @USNavy gunboats USS Lexington and USS Choctaw. With their fire supporting them, Lieb’s men forced the confederates to withdraw.
Born in 1837 in Dover, OH, Quantrill led an unsettled, criminal life before the war, including killing a man in Mendota, IL, robbing homes, and stealing livestock. Settling in Kansas, he favored slavery once he learned he could profit by re-capturing people who had escaped it.
At a call for volunteers, Hilliker stepped forward and served as an infantryman during the skirmish. While firing at the enemy, he was shot in the face and grievously wounded. Taken to the rear, Hilliker was laid under a tree, his comrades noting that he wouldn't last long.
A graduate of West Point, he had resigned his commission in 1835 in order to marry Sarah Knox Taylor, whose father, future US President Zachary Taylor, did not approve of her marrying an Army officer. Three months later, they both contracted malaria and Sarah passed away.
In 1877, Private Brownell was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in killing Ellsworth’s assailant. His are the earliest actions in U.S. history to be recognized with the Medal of Honor. His medal is now in the collection of the @smithsonian’s @amhistorymuseum.
