The act allowed national banks to be created again, and laid out a plan to establish a national paper currency. It also gave the federal government the ability to issue war bonds and securities to help in funding the effort to win the #CivilWar.
Once it became clear this was the entire Confederate force, Canby led the rest of the Ft. Craig garrison to reinforce Roberts. Initially, Canby’s men had the upper hand, including repelling the first and only lancer charge of the war, made by a company of Texas mounted infantry.
Continuing his service with the 6th Infantry Regiment, Armistead was sent to several western posts, ultimately commanding a garrison in San Diego. He was great friends with Winfield Scott Hancock, who also served with the 6th Infantry.
Lewis Armistead was born #OTD in 1817 in @CityofNewBern, NC, into a distinguished military family. His father and 4 uncles served during the War of 1812. His uncle George Armistead commanded @FtMcHenryNPS during the battle that led to the writing of The Star Spangled Banner.
After the war, Mulholland returned to Philadelphia, where he became Chief of the @PhillyPolice. He later served as United States Pension Agent, and wrote a history of the 116th Pennsylvania. He also studied art, and was an accomplished painter.
