Rhodes' wartime journal and letters were published by one of his great-grandsons under the title "All For the Union" in 1985. His writings were prominently featured in ' film "The Civil War" on in 1990.

Fayetteville, NC was occupied by Union troops under General William Tecumseh Sherman in 1865 as part of their ongoing Carolinas Campaign. They captured the Confederate Arsenal there, which had produced nearly a million rounds of ammunition in 1864.

Lewis Armistead was born in 1817 in , NC, into a distinguished military family. His father and 4 uncles served during the War of 1812. His uncle George Armistead commanded during the battle that led to the writing of The Star Spangled Banner.

After the war, Mulholland returned to Philadelphia, where he became Chief of the . He later served as United States Pension Agent, and wrote a history of the 116th Pennsylvania. He also studied art, and was an accomplished painter.
