In the back half of the run, as Logan’s physical and mental health begin to decline, he twice sees visions of amalgamated love interests. 5/11
In the Claremont/Miller Wolverine miniseries, Logan finds himself torn between Mariko and Yukio. As Yukio tries to seduce him, her face actually shifts to that of Mariko in Logan’s perception, and he subsequently refuses Yukio’s advances. 2/11
In a 2014 essay, Louise Simonson offers her unique perspective as Claremont’s long-time editor on the compressed storytelling that Claremont’s X-Men comics created in contrast to varying industry standards. #xmen 1/5
Jubilee is an orphan living in a shopping mall, and even that meagre existence is being dissolved in front of her eyes. Her witty banter and con-artist smile hide a tragic backstory right from the start. 2/7
Rahne cries the most, both because of her youth, her traumatic upbringing, and her emotional repression (which tends to result in outbursts). Dani is second because focal character. Illyana becomes the focal character later on, but she’s highly traumatized. 2/3
We also see Kitty confiding in Illyana about her relationship with Piotr (a major component of their friendship for decades) and Illyana offering insight into Kitty’s seemingly repressed feelings (another major component of their dynamic). 6/8
The girls are seen bonding through a mix of friendly gestures and playful cruelty/ribbing. The dynamic that is established in this vignette is very much what we’ll see between the two for the remainder of the Claremont run (and even beyond). 5/8
“Special Edition: X-Men” (mostly a reprint of GSX#1) was published in 1983. The Kitty/Illyana story (set just after the Brood Saga) is titled “A Day Like Any Other” and features Illyana distracting Kitty while the others setup a surprise birthday party for her. 3/8
Claremont’s Spider-Man is very close to established canon and deviates little from what we’d expect. Claremont does, however, draw out Peter’s sense of burden and of the absurdity of the superhero calling. We’d see this again in later X-Men crossovers with him. 4/10
