All in all, it’s a memorable inversion of gender type with an important antecedent in the sexual revolution. 10/10

In this sense, the image that Smith was referencing had a clear purpose of equalizing sexualized portrayals in magazine periodical spreads. Drawing on that image could thus be seen to do (or aim to do) the same thing for comics. 5/10

From there, Claremont establishes Betsy as a 100% valid and legitimate hero – if anything, she’s seen to have an excess of the heroic spirit, and the character is then able to move beyond a rough turn in her history to become an elite Marvel superhero. 7/7

But, in one notable story from Captain Britain vol. 2 (1986), written and drawn by Alan Davis, Betsy would briefly take on the mantle of Captain Britain herself, only to be brutally beaten and have her eyes gouged out by a villain called Slaymaster. 3/7

Brownie & Graydon specifically point to Dani’s insistence on individualizing her costume to reflect her Cheyenne heritage, lest it be subsumed by her identity as an X-Man, a choice that creates a power battle with Xavier, the authority enforcing collective costume. 5/5

Additionally, she is declared dead on-page a bewildering 4 times, which is equal to Wolverine, who appears in over 3 times as many panels as her (and has a healing factor that makes near-death experiences somewhat more trivial). 3/5

Alex, however, resists, questioning the logic, at which point we see Psylocke’s butterfly flare activate, clearly indicating that she is manipulating him telepathically (thus crossing a big moral boundary throughout Claremont’s run). 5/7

Ultimately, it's subjective. We can read Psylocke as a deconstruction of the artificially effeminate superheroine archetype or we can simply read her as a character who grew and changed over the years and adopted different costumes to reflect that. I prefer the former. 8/8

More broadly, the character frequently reflects on her desire to be in the thick of the fight, often expressing frustration that her telepath role places her aside. And when she gets her heart’s desire through the Siege Perilous, it’s to be a ninja assassin. 7/8
