Here’s to wishing all my friends a Happy New Year. In honor of the occasion, here are some gorgeous Poe illustrations by English artist James William Carling, who just so happens to have been born 1857

Flemish painter David Teniers the Younger was born 1610. I’ve always found his creatures and demons in his Temptation of St. Anthony series quite disturbing.

Claude-Joseph Vernet died 1789. Many of his paintings are reminiscent of works by Claude Lorrain from 100~ years earlier (one painting of Lorrain’s happened to be a favorite of my beloved John Keats)

Claude Lorrain died 1682. The 1st painting, The Enchanted Castle (1664), was a favorite of John Keats & may have inspired these lines from Ode to a Nightingale:

Charm’d magic casements, opening on the foam
Of perilous seas, in faery lands forlorn.

Irish painter Francis Danby was born 1793. He is still considered one of the greatest British painters of the Romantic era. The first painting, “The Deluge” (1840), was quite successful and revitalized his later career
