Big Joe, the infamous NPC from Xenogears has an expy in Xenosaga in the form of Great Joe. Both are men w/ gambling motifs who shrouded in mystery that the player may fight over the course of the game.

Big Joe (full name 'Joe Rikiishi' in JP) in Xenogears is named after Joe Yabuki and Touru Rikiishi of Ashita no Joe. He even has a striking resemblance to the latter.
His English name is 'Joey Balboa', a reference to a different iconic boxer.

Saito has said that Rex and Nia have big boots to make their movements look bigger despite their short statures.
