You can see the shock in his eyes as he makes the connection and knows that Erwin was about to make the same choice Kenny had: reject the serum and die.

'Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pour though and shine down on us to let us know they are happy.'

Levi remembering Erwin and his friends when he looks up at the stars because no matter how far away they are, they provide the light in his life. Even after they have left him they still carry on shining down on him. They remind him of the good and the bad, the love and the loss.

"We are trapped behind these stupid wall. Trapped by people's fear. Erwin. I want to know what true freedom feels like. To be out in the open. Erwin, I want to be free. With you."

Levi whispered the last bit, and had Erwin not been listening, he would have missed it.
