"oh I hate the New 52 suit, this silver age costume sucks too" yeah well I bet SOMEbody feels PRETTY SILLY right about now https://t.co/QWsJg7PuYK
Today I re-read my first comic to get Diamond Distribution, SAN HANNIBAL -- Messy, lurid, paranoid, definitely a Dan in his mid 20s kind of comic. This is my first time drawing characters from it in... man, five years or so. Seems longer 🔵
@Macu_macumazahn They called him that sarcastically, like “Einstein”— since Matt’s dad made him swear off athletics in favor of academics, the neighborhood kids thought he was a bookworm who was too scared to participate in physical activities. Hence, “daredevil”
Despite the specific Miller and Mignola eras I’m trying to ape here, my actual favorite Sin City and Hellboy stories are FAMILY VALUES and CONQUEROR WORM, respectively https://t.co/9QwqFDhU38
But Paul Grist's work is so conceptially dense and narratively complex that it's basically impossible to fake— like, these pages are all from the same comic, JACK STAFF. I've been trying to get my head around it for years, with LAVENDER JACK (no relation) being my latest attempt.
LAVENDER JACK!
Our selections for this week: Frankenstein nuns, barroom espionage, a rope fight, and at least one crunchy typo — for texture.
Yours, with the house’s compliments, on @webtoonofficial! Link below 🪢
You can check out LAVENDER JACK for free on Webtoon — an upscale 1910s mystery/adventure/superhero series (meant to be pretty good, got nominated for a couple of awards but I’m far too modest to boast) https://t.co/JyNxbi1h5n
Station ident for all you newcomers:
I’m Dan Schkade (pronounced “Scotty”) creator of LAVENDER JACK on Webtoon — here you’ll get very sincere fan content next to complete off-beat nonsense, along with light comics criticism and high-quality recs. A good follow, well done 🥂
🦇 @DialHForHagai and I pooled our resources (he wrote, I drew). Happy #BatmanDay to those who observe 🦇
