DR. JACK QUARTZ for @TheGrimScreen. Professor Moriarty by way of Hannibal Lecter — arch enemy of proto-pulp hero Nick Carter, and a strong contender for the title of The First Supervillain 🦋
THE IMPOSTER JACK — an early version of this character was going to be a sanitized, state-sponsored stand-in for the real LJ; Slowly, the character shifted into a monster heavy with a decidedly different origin story. Which is what we’re getting into in Act Two: THE TWO JACKS.
UNIFORMS — one of the big existential threats this season is the faceless, omnipresent Ministry of War and a way to reinforce that is to keep our supporting cast in uniform. Gall’s keeps changing, becoming more elaborate, which I like to think @jemale and I both have fun with.
THE WAR — S3 takes us through this alternate timeline’s equivalent of WWI, heavy iron mechs and all. A lot of thought went into how to depict the war in a way that didn’t make us feel like we were wearing a costume to a wake; My friend @Boilerplate1893 was a big help there.
SALAZAR — this creep was the hit with readers I was hoping he’d be, happy to say. We don’t know much about Ducky heading into S3, so Salazar’s presence was designed to help fill that in by implication. There’s maybe a little bit of Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor in there, too.
MADAME FERRIER & HONORIA CRABB — Crabb’s quit the constabulary and become a Private Eye, so her S3 look is very “Activewear Sam Spade.” The tan gives her a different color profile from Ferrier, whose new coat is based on the one George Pastell wears in Hammer’s 1959 THE MUMMY
SIR MIMLEY & DUCKY — I knew the Bastrops would be on their own for most of Act One, so we gave them some soft redesigns to gel better as an adventuring duo. Finding Ducky’s new hairstyle was a chore, but the one we landed on is SO much easier to draw than her old looks.
