WILLIAM BLAKE. The second circle of hell. Dante and Virgil pass Judge Minos, flicking his tail at wretched souls. Next are the lovers trapped in whirlwinds of desire. Dido, Achilles, Francesca...Dante faints. He was infatuated with Beatrice--will love destroy him too?!
In the fifth circle of hell, Dante and Virgil see faces scarred by fury. Some of the raging are locked in perpetual battles with others. Others are locked in a perpetual battle within themselves. Then they arrive at the foot of a high tower.... Art by William Blake.

Dante and Virgil face Lucifer, the "morning star" - closest to God, most free, terribly fallen. He chews on Judas, perhaps closest to Jesus, and similarly terribly mistaken.
