Poetry, paint, odd shards of skewed wisdom, an irksome smugness in leaving England, tendency to slip into Lycra, keeping my common voice out of the discourse.

Here we have a canvas in four stages. A reliable source tells me they get worse as they go along, but I can’t help adding new layers and media. No. 4 even has printing ink and mono prints scattered across it. Seeing what works, & not worrying too much about it. Orkney landscape.

Underneath a blackbird’s gaze
The wrens are flitting, and their ways
Are undetected from above
In stoney brown and green - I love

Their cheeky ways and pompous tweet
The rustle, hopstep of their feet
And surreptitious foraging
The song of life they seem to sing

Today we have two sketches using simple forms, chalks and oil mediums, and an essential telegraph pole. Based on standing stone studies, Orkney.

So silly
To sum up a simple song
To summarise
Where it began

To start a job
Then leave a job
So quickly
Seems odd

a year of subtle learning
A discovering year
Examining
All that’s near

Embracing shards of life
With all its flaws
I’ll never close
Those open doors

The pepper mill
Is just the grist
And joins the salt
Onto this list

I spy the table
Full of whist
And add the napkins
To my list

A handmade bun
Looks like a fist
All cutlery
Gleams on my list

Plates, glasses, sauce
- you get the gist
All elements
My dinner list

Returning to an old canvas, chucking oil paint, collaged scraps, charcoal and mud at it, I finish up with this. Based on Ring of Brognar sketches. What a mess.

Sentinels. Two studies of neolithic sites in earthy stones, chalk, pastel, oils and beech charcoal. Completed very quickly, just a few minutes.

Standing still 1-3. and stuff on thick paper, based on visits to Neolithic sites. One telegraph pole included.

Some roads are shorter
Than needed - breaking geos
With swift helix cuts
And bridging fault lines

With hooked certainty -
We seem to be free
To flex swivelled feet
And beat physics up

No longer seeing
The cut of the land
Or needing geology
To understand

Orkney Saga. This is a large piece with bits of stone circle, cloud burst, sea and land, and, of course, a telegraph pole or two. Vivid memories from the last few days. Thanks
