For #IWD2021 we want to shout about the incredible artist behind the 1843 #LostPortrait of #Dickens. Margaret Gillies was a radical thinker who believed in social reform & an early supporter of the suffragist movement.

In the 1920s #artist Anna Marongiu created illustrations dedicated to #ThePickwickPapers. Anna seems to have really loved the story with a full 262 illustrations! Last year they were leant to the MAN Museum in Sardinia, Italy for a wonderful exhibition 🖌️

An infrared scan and x-ray of this 1847 portrait of #CatherineDickens revealed the original charcoal lines by artist Daniel Maclise when he began the work as well as small objects and background details hidden under layers of overpaint.
