The Weedle family's beta sprites were first revealed on Game Freak's official Japanese website in 1997. Originally, their designs were completely different -- and even their names were different in development.

Early Dragonite:
Dragonite's Red & Green sprite is his earliest known design, pre-dating his official artwork. Dragonite's sprite shows a ridge running down his back -- but it was later revised out of his design.

When considering the evolution of Gen 1 Pokemon designs, it's important to realize their sprites were created BEFORE Ken Sugimori's iconic artwork.
Weird sprites aren't poor representations of Pokemon -- rather, Sugimori's artwork is a revision of the Pokemon seen in the sprite.

First revealed when Gen 1 beta assets leaked in Feb 2019, this Pokemon was originally planned as the Zubat family's first stage -- but he got scrapped before release.

Lost Pokemon of the Day: Twinz

Beta Remoraid:
Remoraid's Japanese name is Teppouo, meaning "Watergun Fish." This is likely because in Gold & Silver's 1997 demo, his original design was based on a revolver.

Early Dratini:
Dratini's Red & Green sprite -- his earliest known design, pre-dating his artwork -- shows he originally had a segmented belly. His later Blue sprite used this design as well.

Beta Clefairy:
Clefairy's beta design was one of the first 3 Pokemon ever created. Originally, trainers used Clefairy as a pet, Rhydon to carry things, and Lapras to transport them over the sea.

Lost Pokemon of the Day: Mikon
