Many congratulations to all the Sparrowhawks (@UofGFantasy MLitt cohort 2021-2022) who got their results this week! Can’t wait to see you begowned and resplendent at graduation in December!!! 👏👏👏
1st week of Fantasy 1 (one of 2 core courses in our Fantasy MLitt @UofGFantasy) - done! It was lovely to meet the new cohort and to discuss balladry, fairy lore and Christina Rossetti’s “Goblin Market” with them! (@EllenKushner, you were mentioned in all my sessions this week!)
Some titanic moments from #Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, published #OTD 45 years ago: Music of the Ainur, Kinslaying at Alqualondë, rescue of Maedhros from Thangorodrim, + Fingolfin's Challenge to Morgoth. Art: Anna Kulisz, Ted Nasmith, Rick Ritchie, + John Howe. @TolkienSociety
Absolutely lovely to have met our new @UofGFantasy MLitt cohort this afternoon - they’ve joined us from all over the world and they’ll be deciding their bird name soon! @uofgenglit @UofGCritStudies @UofGArts
@RealTomEmanuel Also, EVERY single song from Moana, Frozen + Frozen II, and, of course, Encanto!
Varjak Paw, the Messopotamian Blue, and his friends from @whatSFSaid's Varjak Paw duology! For @howlsmovinglib recommendation of these books as excellent fantasy see here: https://t.co/qlQpVRrPcV

For #InternationalCatDay, a thread on #fantasycats!
1. JRR #Tolkien's cats: from a poem on feline pasts and presents, to Tevildo Prince of Cats (an early iteration of Sauron!) and Queen Beruthiel's rather nasty cats!

For Warner, metamorphosis/shape-shifting/change, defines the fairy-tale. The wonders of the fairy-tale “disrupt the apprehensible world in order to open spaces for dreaming alternatives” - a lot of common ground with many definitions of fantasy/the fantastic here.
