If we want children to become thinkers & not simply consumers, then our education system needs to expose them to fairy tales & folklore, especially those from other countries. They stimulate the imagination, as well as show how problems can be overcome through one's choices.
For children who grow up in an unhappy family, a book can often feel more like home than the one they live in.
