In Norse myth, Odin is associated with death on the battlefield. His weapon is the spear Gungnir, infused with rune magic so that it never misses its target. In Final Fantasy VII, if Odin's opponent is immune to Instant Death, he will use Gungnir - mistranslated as 'Gunge Lance'.

I seriously love how Nojima took Nomura’s original Final Fantasy VII character art for Elmyra and built a whole subplot around it in Traces of Two Pasts.
