In Scottish folklore, the cait sith (fairy cats) were believed to haunt funerals and steal the deceased's soul. During one tale, however, a funeral procession of cats is seen carrying a coffin topped with a little crown. This is why Final Fantasy VII's Cait Sith wears one.

‘Val’ in old Germanic languages means ‘the dead’, specifically ‘those slain in battle’ in Norse.
‘Thea’ is an Ancient Greek name meaning ‘goddess’.
Valisthea could then mean ‘The Slain Goddess’ or ‘Goddess of the Dead’, etc.

Thinking ahead to when ‘Greek Myths That Inspired Final Fantasy VII’ has been released, would anyone be interested in me taking a crack at Norse mythology in Final Fantasy VIII?
In Final Fantasy VII, Jenova is an entity that “fell from the heavens”, whose influence is still felt 2000 years later. Jenova amalgamates ‘Jehovah’, one Latinisation of the Hebrew god’s name, and ‘nova’, the Latin word for ‘new’. It could therefore be interpreted as ‘New God’.
I was today years old when I learned those nasty little faces that pop out of the Brain Pods in Final Fantasy VII Remake are actually based on wee pink guys in the OG. How in the world did I miss this before?
