25 December 1800. The first Christmas tree in Great Britain was erected at the Queen’s Lodge, Windsor, by the German-born, Queen Consort, Charlotte (the wife of George III). In the German states, Christmas trees were already popular during the festive season.

17 December 1989. The first episode of the popular animated TV series, The Simpsons, was broadcast in the USA, on the Fox network. The series began with a Christmas special called: “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.”

10 December 1520. Martin Luther burned his copy of the Roman Catholic Papal Bull, Exsurge Domine, outside Wittenberg’s Elster Gate, in front a crowd of students and faculty staff from the University of Wittenberg. The document had threatened rebels with excommunication.

2 December 1814. Controversial philosopher, Marquis de Sade, died (aged 74). His writings depicted sexual fantasies, many associated with violence. The words sadism and sadist are derived from his name and his actions.

27 November 1701. Anders Celsius was born in Uppsala, Sweden. He proposed the Centigrade temperature scale, which was later renamed Celsius in his honour.

Guy Fawkes was named the 30th “Greatest Briton” in a viewer poll conducted by the BBC2 in 2002.

26 October 1859. The steam clipper, Royal Charter, powered by a coal fired engine, was wrecked in a storm near the Anglesey coast. The precise number of dead has been estimated from surviving records at 450, making it the highest death toll of any shipwreck on the Welsh coast.

9 October 1834. The Dublin & Kingstown Railway, the first public railway on the island of Ireland, opened. It linked Westland Row in Dublin with Kingstown Harbour (Dún Laoghaire) in County Dublin.
