Lady Day (25 March) was New Year’s Day until 1752 in England. It celebrated the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.

6 March 1998. The classic comedy film, The Big Lebowski, starring Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, a Los Angeles free spirit and avid bowler, was released in USA. The Big Lebowski has subsequently become a cult classic and ardent fans call themselves “achievers”.

3 March 1983. Belgian cartoonist, Georges Remi (Hergé), died (aged 75). He was the creator of the comic book series, The Adventures of Tintin. It was one of the most popular comic book series of the 20th century, published in over 70 languages with sales over 200 million.

9 February 1997. The Simpsons surpassed, The Flintstones, with the episode “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show” to become the longest-running prime-time animated series in US TV history.

4 February 1977. The classic album, Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, was released. It was No.1 on the album charts in the USA and UK and won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. It sold over 40 million copies worldwide.

18 January 1788. A total of 800 convicted British criminals landed at Botany Bay, Australia. They had committed various crimes, and were sentenced to suffer hard labour in Australia. Below is a list of 19 crimes that were punishable by transportation to Australia.

14 January 1892. Lutheran cleric, Martin Niemöller, was born in Lippstadt, Germanye. He was a leading religious opponent of Adolf Hitler. He’s best known for his “First They Came” statement.

10 January 49 BC. Julius Caesar famously crossed the Rubicon River, in northern Italy. To remain in Gaul meant forfeiting his power to his enemies in Rome. By crossing the Rubicon into Italy, he was declaring war. It’s seen as a pivotal moment in the history of the Roman Empire.

1 January 1879. Edward Morgan (“EM”) Forster was born in London. His novels examine class differences and hypocrisy, including: A Room with a View, Howards End, and A Passage to India. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature 16 times, but never won.
