23 September 1459. The Yorkists defeated the Lancastrians at the Battle of Blore Heath in the first major battle of Wars of the Roses. At least 2,000 Lancastrians were killed, with the Yorkists losing nearly 1,000 men.

7 September 1969. The ABC TV cartoon series, The Beatles, was broadcast for the last time in the USA. A total of 39 episodes were produced from 1965 to 1969. Each one was based on the lyrics of a Beatles song. The series was voiced by actors, but real Beatles songs were used.

29 August 1632. John Locke, known as the “Father of Classical Liberalism”, was born in Wrington, Somerset. He’s considered one of the first of the British empiricists. His writings influenced Voltaire, Rousseau and the United States Declaration of Independence.

26 August 55 BC. Julius Caesar crossed the English Channel for his first invasion of Britain. The Romans briefly established a beachhead on the coast of Kent, but abandoned it and returned to Gaul. They would return.

31 July 1917. The 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in WW1 began in Belgium as British forces attacked the German Army. The assault was spearheaded by the British commander in chief, Sir Douglas Haig. After 3 months of bloody combat, British and Canadian troops gained victory.

30 July 1792. The new French national anthem La Marseillaise by Claude Rouget de Lisle was first performed in Paris. It was composed in Strasbourg after the declaration of war by France against Austria, and originally called War Song for the Army of the Rhine.

26 July 1745. The first recorded women’s cricket match took place on Gosden Common, near Guildford in Surrey. The event was reported in the Reading Mercury which described it as “the greatest cricket match that was played in this part of England.”

22 July 1298. Edward I’s archers, using longbows for the first time, defeated William Wallace and his Scottish forces at the Battle of Falkirk. Shortly after the battle, Wallace resigned as Guardian of Scotland.

21 July 1403. At the Battle of Shrewsbury, the Lancastrian King Henry IV (depicted, right) defeated a rebel army led by Henry “Harry Hotspur” Percy from Northumberland, who was killed. The battle reaffirmed the effectiveness of the longbow in battle.

17 July 1717. George I sailed down the River Thames with acclaimed musical composer Frideric Handel (left) and 50 musicians who publicly performed the composer’s Water Music for the first time.
