Recently watched the cult classic '81 horror film, DEAD AND BURIED, which plays out like a feature length gory Twilight Zone episode with the requisite twist ending; highlight is the wicked needle in the eye, and the Big Bad in none other than Grandpa Joe - Jack Albertson.
If it's #TexAvery, then #SenorDroopy has to have a Big Bad Wolf; #TheDickTracyShow - stereotypes or diversity before its time? The characters were broad, but they weren't the butt of the joke, they're heroic; #PopeyeandSon: give an old character a son and a family - '80s trope.
Comic reading this weekend: #Stillwater #10 (the kids take over, maybe not for the better); #Wiccan & #Hulkling Annihilation #1 (covers a lot of ground and Billy & Teddy's backstory); #Nightwing #84 (Fear State crossover feels like a detour). #Marvel #DCComics #Image
#TexAvery even had #ScrewySquirrel do the old "You don't say" gag in the relentlessly aggressive #HappyGoNutty; Dr. Dred steals colors on #TheDrakPack because the network wouldn't allow him to do anything really violent on a kid's show in 1980; #MartinMystery had good monsters.
Comic reading this weekend: #CommandersInCrisis #11 (the Cosmic Sepsis is consuming the world, and everyone is fighting everyone); #Nightwing #83 (Dick Grayson does something with his inheritance from Alfred that would make Bernie Sanders happy). #Image #DCComics
@cinema_strikes @jratm23 @billteck @AdamRackoff @SatMornPod @DamianHempstead Yes, it sure is, and it might be because the image of Harold Sakata in that black suit and lethal bowler were trademarked at the time; the voice actor for Goldfinger makes him sound vaguely like Scrooge McDuck.
#SaturdayMorningCartoons today: the #SpeedRacer two parter, "The Desperate Desert Race," where Speed and company travel to Sand O Land (the Middle East) to race against Kim Jugger and his Black Tiger; there's intrigue, revolution, quicksand, & deadly scorpions; total fun.
Comic reading this weekend; #Reptil #3 (really grown to like these teen characters, promising book); #CommandersInCrisis #10 (some decent action, one great moment, but still too talky): #Nightwing #82 (one long flashback to explain Dick's new sister. #Marvel #DCcomics #Image
"The Dragons of Ashida" is one #JonnyQuest episode where the villains take front & center, the high pitched laughing giant, Sumi, & the cackling Dr. Ashida are pure WWII era Yellow Peril, while those dragons are still impressively scary; always liked how Sumi gets the last laugh.
#SaturdayMorningCartoons for the 4th of July weekend was all #Superman; battling Luthor, the Warlock, and Brainiac in the '60s & the "80s; tangling with Bizarro and Mr. Mitzelplik in the '90s; and contrasting '60s #Superboy with 21st Century Conner Kent on #YoungJustice.
