Originally a Japanese folktale - 'Momotaro, the Peach Boy' becomes war-time propaganda in the first feature-length (and v influential) Anime:
'Momotaro: Sacred Sailors / 桃太郎 海の神兵 / Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei / Momotaro’s Divine Sea Warriors' (1945) dir. Mitsuyo Seo.
Tweets from this account will be far less frequent than usual, and messages & replies even less frequent - many apologies for this. The "new" twitter layout is proving pretty much incomprehensible to navigate; especially given the amount of traffic this site gets. :(
For #FairyTaleTuesday --- distaffs/spinning wheels can be found in folklore across the world. They have been imbued with many different cultural meanings & often symbolise/problematise power within the domestic sphere:

In cinema, #DollsPuppetsToys can pop up in the most unexpected places! Here we have Mickey Rooney's fruit orchestra from:
'Strike up the Band' (1940) dir. Busby Berkeley.
To celebrate the magnificent art in @mrjamesmayhew's new book 'Koshka's Tales', here we have a glorious Soviet animation of:
'The Humpbacked Horse / Конёк-Горбуно́к / Konyok Gorbunok / The Magic Pony' (1947) dir. Ivan Ivanov-Vano.
How about some traditional English pantomime puppetry for #DollsPuppetsToys?

When #Caturday meets #DollsPuppetsToys --- An early anime that's almost *too* adorable - but has a strong political subtext & demonstrates the lineage of the kawaii aesthetic:
'Suteneko Tora-chan / Little Tora: The Abandoned Cat' (1947) dir. Kenzô Masaoka.
Kihachirō Kawamoto brings his typically glorious Bunraku sensibility to the exquisite craft of Czech puppetry -- his Sleeping Beauty adaptation co-produced with the Jiří Trnka Studio in Prague.
#DollsPuppetsToys
'Briar-Rose / Dornröschen' (1990) dir. Kihachirō Kawamoto.
Something special to behold for #DollsPuppetsToys --- created in 1930 by one of the most remarkable animation teams ever:
