Kawaks has a mode to do inter-frame blending and turn that shifting screen-door transparency into some real transparency. This looks like it'd be a good base to start from, since it's cleaner and probably compresses better too.
good news: the PS1 font is pixel-identical to the arcade one, so I can just slot in the font and use the arcade images, which are much easier to deal with (since I can remove layers)
but when you select OK, it takes you hack to the top of the OC feature, with their name in the lower-left.
And is that the same font as is used in dialogue?

it might be a good idea to use the PS1 version instead anyway. it has more characters!
yeah, this game isn't remotely monospaced, so this won't work. I'm gonna need per-character widths, and that may be tricky.
