Day one, hour one of making Krita tools, not trying to make anything, just stabbing away at the brush engine.

Smearing, texture, easy to produce lost edges... yeah, we're gonna get along fine.

My painterly work usually leans super hard on value. I'm pretty happy to pick vibrant, saturated colors when I make inked work, but my painted stuff is usually too conservative. So this was a good exercise for me.

But, sometimes, I get to flex the lettering or design part of my brain. And I enjoy it a heap. It's a good change of pace.

One inked elephant dude. Ready to be flatted, the lines set to black, exported, and rigged for animating.

To setup a paperdoll animation, I plan my sketch with different colors for each part. I then ink or paint each colored segment on its own layer.

I have no idea if this is the common methodology, but this is how my bad brain makes sense of it.

I made myself a looping avatar. Mastodon supports GIFs. It's an opt-in user preference.

Spotting dense blacks and cast shadows first gives you scaffolding to drop the rest of the middling values in later.

Value reigns over hue and saturation with an iron glove. If it’s right, the others can be super out-there and work.

It’s a common thing, but it bears repeating.

I like how easily Affinity Photo exports layers via their slice tool. It doesn't suffer from the fury-inducing one pixel of alpha-smudged image border when you resize (the way layers do in Photoshop) either.
