The Royal Botanic Society was founded by James De Carle Sowerby (son of naturalist James Sowerby) in 1839, and leased 18 acres of in Regent’s Park for experimental gardening, till it dissolved in 1932.

Florilegium, or flower books, were compiled as visual explanations of plants, illustrating as many aspects of a flower as possible including its roots and growth. This florilegium is one of the earliest examples, engraved by Flemish designer Adriaen Collaert in Antwerp in 1593.
