OTD in 1863 the Army of Tennessee approaches the Army of the Cumberland causing heavy skirmishing with Federal cavalry.
An alert General Rosecrans moves General Thomas’s corps, by a hard night march, north to protect the left flank.

OTD in 1862, in the waters off of Norfolk Virginia, the CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor battle each other. Although the fight was inconclusive, naval warfare was transformed.
