It's prominently used in the first hour when the film distances itself temporarily from the cosmic horror/biblical warfare and allures you with the joy of mundanity in living a normal, a familiar sight in our world but not in the Eva universe.

The fact that they only share less than five minutes of total screentime together in 3.0+1.0's 155 minutes runtime, or even the entire 464 minutes of Rebuild and that's enough to make me FEEL for them is a storytelling achievement.
