I don't know much about the novel, but according to info i found, Gai and Mina in the novels are simply in professional relationship, being ally. However, the manga and illustrations of Astray series just straight up telling you "they are fucking!"

@CryogenicNeo To be fair, Barbatos looks better under Obari as animation director and to me that is the definite Barbatos. Until you see its lineart. You can shove this in Code Geass, Kyokai Senki and numerous other shows and it won't stand out. It is a generic design.
