I’ve tried to capture this scene multiple times over the course of a year. Learning more about narrative, visual hierarchy, colour and light etc. has helped it come a long way. I hate firelight now and how it doesn’t show blues/greens, but I’ve kind of learned to paint it!
Some thumbnails, there’s not much to read here but I was focusing mostly on capturing a strong and dynamic throw. Marlin’s throw in the final is something like a rough and inefficient Harai-Goshi.
Some close ups.
-There’s Marlin, fisherman monk
-Coraline, Sea Elf librarian and wizard
-Jura, Grung Paladin
-The villain, Old Tooth, wereshark pirate captain
By the end of day 1 I had the rough colours and lines down for the piece
2: Character detail and colours
3: Gave the cockatrice a bit more ferocity and anatomical tension, brickwork detail
4: More detail overall, added a lot of depth by working in a sky gradient and adding clouds
I spent 3-4 weeks floundering on this old version. I hadn’t learned enough about visual hierarchy or narrative and ended up scrapping it. To revive that old idea I gave myself a deadline to finish the piece in 25 hours of working blocks, across 5 days.
Streaming some portfolio work! Having another crack at a cockatrice illustration from last year now that I know more about narrative and visual heirarchy. Come hang out at https://t.co/QIOFute9CI

Here's one I haven't posted individually, a DM friend commissioned this player friend's character in Curse of Strahd! A bard that has fallen to follow Tharizdun and now his eye is his familiar👁️#DnD #dndart
Some unfinished works through 2020 that ended up just being practice pieces. My current goal is to finish some scenes like this by March! And maybe I should revive one of these, not sure which🤔
