Next on our #Chippenham tour it's Back Avon Bridge. This flimsy wooden crossing stood at the end of River Street near where Lovers Walk now stands. It led to an island called The Ham. It was regularly lost due to floods & erosion, the final time being in 1927 #ExploreYourArchive
Our next #home is #Heywood House, built in the early C.17th for the 1st Earl of #Marlborough. During WW1 it was used as a convalescence home for wounded soldiers, one of several such homes in the county. #ExploreYourArchive #Wiltshirepast

These C.17th homes in #Corsham are called the Flemish Weavers Cottages. A 1672 Royal proclamation invited persecuted Dutch artisans to settle in England. A few may have settled in the town, bringing new innovations
#OnThisDay 1736 Edward des Bouverie, Earl of Radnor died.
In 1717 he bought Longford Castle, #Odstock. He was buried in #Britford & bequeathed £500 to the colonists of Georgia for them to give up slavery which was apparently declined

Happy 170th anniversary @NeeldArts! The Illustrated London News reported on the festivities. The High Street, filled with spectators & bedecked with flowers, sported flags and pine-boughed archways. The next day cheese overflowed from the new larger market into the High Street!
