Watanabe Seitei (1851 – 1918) was a Japanese painter. Seitei blended Western realism with the delicate colors and washes of the Kikuchi Yōsai School, introducing a new approach to kachōga (bird-and-flower painting).

This bird is mentioned at The Iliad of Homer, XX, 274-5, referring to a night heron (Νycticorax nycticorax).
… 'Pallas Athena in the middle of the night released a heron (ἐρῳδιὸν). It was not observed, but its cry was heard’‘.
