In the old concepts, Zeo was the main villain of the Drake story and was bent on covering the world in dark because he saw light as a bad thing, as it was harmful to Shades like him. Drake would've ultimately failed to stop him but not without destroying his unholy armor.

The original concepts of Drake and Zeo's story pretty different. It was focused on the world ending and then trying to fix it. Drake was a much angrier person and Zeo was very melancholy and talked plenty.
Drake's story was a generic RPG story but with him failing at the end.

I like how shading Zeo's face in this old concept picture with the pencil made them look like they're fuzzy. They're supposed to be smooth.
