"Labor" by Saturnino Herran, 1908, is a striking work. Painted when the artist was only twenty-one, it stands out from many other paintings that strive to depict the dignity of labor. Herran places not labor itself in the foreground, but the family: what labor is for.

Portraits by Gottfried Lindauer, late 1800s. Originally from Bohemia, Lindauer left Europe for New Zealand to avoid military service and found work painting prominent Maori chiefs and their families. His work accurately captured the clothing and facial tattoos of the time.

Traveling (Lead Kindly Light) by William Edouard Scott, 1918. Scott studied painting under Henry Ossawa Tanner. This painting was originally created as a cover illustration for Easter 1918 issue of The Crisis, a magazine published by the NAACP.

Portrait of an African Man by Jan Mostaert, c. 1525. It's unknown who this painting represents, but his rich clothing indicates that he was a figure of some importance. One theory is that he may be Christophle le More, a black archer in the court of the Emperor Charles V.
