Born #OTD 1765, Thomas (Tyrwhitt) Jones, MP for 4 different constituencies between 1790-1811.
During the Parliament of 1797 Jones developed a reputation as an independent & eccentric Member, prone to intervening in debates.

1/#OTD 1688 William of Orange received a letter from 7 English nobles, asking him to place military pressure on James II to name the king's daughter Mary (William's wife) his heir.
This letter would eventually lead to the #GloriousRevolution and William & Mary taking the throne.
#MPMonday is John Oldcastle, MP for Herefordshire in 1404, though this is not why he is well-known!
A close friend of Henry V, in 1413 Oldcastle was convicted of heresy but was able to evade execution for 4 years.

Born #OTD 1756, Sir John Newport, MP for Waterford 1803-1832.
Appointed Irish chancellor of the exchequer in his friend Lord Grenville’s ministry, Newport supported parliamentary reform and Catholic relief throughout his career.

1/ #MPMonday today is Sir John Russell, elected MP for Buckinghamshire in 1529. Skilled in foreign languages, Russell was key to Henry VIII's business & wars on the continent.
"In 1522 his valour at the siege of Morlaix cost him an eye but gained him a knighthood." 📝
Died #OTD 1850, Lancelot Shadwell, Ripon's MP from before 1826 until his appointment as Vice Chancellor 18 months later.
A talented barrister, Shadwell specialised in estate law & unsuccessfully attempted to introduce a bill on the matter in 1827.

In 1828 O'Connell was elected MP for #CountyClare but as a Catholic he refused to take the Oath of Supremacy.
However, his election triggered Catholic emancipation in 1829 and O'Connell was re-elected that year.

In the late 1920s MP Josiah Wedgwood proposed a project to write a biography of every MP who'd sat in the Commons. Given a Deed of Charter in 1940, in 1951 the govt granted funding to resume the project as we know it.
Our final 'Shepherd' in the #nativity scene is yet another Samuel!
A skilled lawyer, this Shepherd's deafness initially stood as a barrier to his entering Parliament, but after his appointment as solicitor general, he became MP for Dorchester 1814-19 👇
