IK Brunel was born #onthisday 1806. Engineer for Great Western Railway, South Devon atmospheric railway SS Great Britain, Eastern and Western, Royal Albert Bridge and Clifton suspension bridge which was completed after his death.
Sir Benjamin Baker was born #onthisday 1840. #Forth Bridge, Aswan Dam and London Metropolitan Railway. He designed the boat which transported Cleopatra's needle.
John Rennie's Southwark Bridge opened #onthisday 1819. Originally called Queen Street bridge, the centre span was said to be the longest cast iron span ever built, at 240ft (73m). It was replaced in 1921 as it was too narrow to cope with the growing traffic.
The Bell Rock lighthouse was first lit #onthisday 1811. John Rennie was engineer but it was Robert Stevenson who designed the lighthouse and spent 4 years on site during construction. The design was based on Smeaton's Eddystone lighthouse.
