This image is of a louse taken from Robert Hooke's Micrographia. What looks like a stick being held by the louse is actually a human hair.

It's Valentines Day! Flowers and jewellery are two of the most popular gifts. The flower in the image is from Erasmus Darwin's The Botanic Garden and the jewels are from A Treatise on Diamonds by John Mawe.

These illustrations are from Narrative of a second voyage... by Sir John Ross published in 1835 it details his travels to and around the Arctic regions.

John Mawe was a mineralogist and a member of Royal Geological Society of Cornwall who owned a shop on The Strand. This image is from his 1813 work A Treatise on Diamonds.

This is the title page from The New World of Words by Edward Phillips published in 1678. It is the first folio English dictionary. Phillips was the nephew of the poet John Milton, best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost.
